| The stadium, which is still on target for completion in March 2006 despite these changes to the plans, will now have a capacity in excess of 15,000 seats. It will be constructed so as to be readily expandable if and when required to a 20,000 capacity under the existing roof, without major additional cost or disruption. This will be achieved by leaving some spaces within the arena walled off and retained as large mid-tier concourses. The additional concrete and steel terracing for additional seats can then be constructed in these spaces with minimal inconvenience to operations.
The stadium will be built within a parkland setting leaving a 10 acre public open space between it and the lake. The stadium will be a magnificent iconic structure, fully enclosed, and under a "floating" curved roof over the whole building for maximum aesthetic impact. The main east and west stands will have upward curving roofs to both increase their size and increase their appearance. Players'changing rooms, etc., club offices, and press/TV facilities will be in the west stand, while the bigger two-tier east stand (which will have attractive views over the parkland and the lake) will contain the main hospitality, restaurant, executive box facilities. The restaurant will be double-aspect, with views both over the pitch and the lake. Facilities will be fully comprehensive, including concourse bars, betting kiosks, etc, as well as 24/7 restaurants and bars. For fans, there will be a 500 capacity sports bar. The complex will include a second full-size grass pitch, complete with mini-stand and athletics track, plus other athletics facilities, as well as eight five-a-side pitches and two full-size artificial pitches. Changing rooms, etc, for the external pitches will be incorporated in one corner of the main stadium building.
In putting this bold proposal to his colleagues, Mayor Martin Winter has demonstrated his commitment to the sporting public of Doncaster, and, of course to the user clubs, as well as the ambition of the town to develop first class facilities for its residents.
Because Mayor Winter wants the full backing of the whole populations, he has launched a web site to inform the public and survey opinions, particular in relation to the capacity issue, which everyone is encouraged to visit. | Rovers 1-1 Preston |
Attendance – 1,932
First Half
The game started at a sedate pace with each side sizing one another up. It took 4 minutes before the first effort on goal came and it was Coppinger, who blasted a twenty yarder high over the bar. For the next five minutes the Rovers spent on the attack when some good football produced two chances on goal for Blundell in as many minutes but he volleyed over from the first and missed the second. Preston then had a chance but good defensive work by the Rovers back line blocked the close range shot from Lewis. The game now opened out with offensive forays going to one end and then the other. But only Warrington was really troubled halfway through the half, when he came out and turned a shot from Healy away with an outstretched leg. Then just after the half hour, Lonergan, the Preston keeper, was called upon to make a flying save to tip away a terrific twenty yarder from Coppinger that was going just under the bar. Cresswell had a clear chance at the other end but there was no power in his shot, giving Warrington an easy save.
On 36 minutes, Blundell intercepted a Preston pass about ten yards into the visitors’ half. He took the ball on and tried to round the keeper but Lonergan put a foot in, took the ball away and cleared. Some good play between Rigoglioso and McIndoe put Blundell in again but Kempson got back to block tackle him on the 18 yard line and save the day for the visitors. Then on 41 minutes, Preston made the breakthrough. Daley, on the right, got away from Priet and put over a good cross for Healy, who crashed his effort against a post. LYNCH met the rebound and struck a low shot across Warrington into the far corner of the net. First blood to the visitors. A minute from the break, Rigoglioso showed his aptitude for taking free kicks with a cracking drive from 40 yards that whistled past the outside of Lonergan’s left hand post. Half-time came with Preston leading by the one goal. There could have been more to both sides and, although play was scrappy at times, there were other times when both sides produced some good football.
Second Half
At the start of the second half, Dave Penney introduced Stuart Jones for Andy Warrington, Francis Tierney for McSporran and Guy Ipoua for Blundell. Preston immediately had a chance but Healy spurned it. Then some good man-to-man football by the Rovers led to Coppinger creating havoc in the visitors defence as first he and then Ravenhill had shots blocked before the referee gave the visitors a free kick and relieved the pressure for them. Then a 1-2 between Ravenhill and Ipoua gave the latter a chance to chip for the far top corner but he was too high. At the Rovers end, Healy intercepted a pass back to Jones causing chaos in the Rovers defence before the ball was put out for a corner. On the hour the visitors nearly increased their lead when Daley intercepted a pass from Priet, got to the 18 yard line and unleashed a low drive, which had Jones diving full length to his right to tip round the post. The Rovers now made the rest of their substitutions so that the team on the field now read: -
Stuart Jones; Jamie Price, Mark Albrighton, Nick Fenton, Chris Beech; Francis Tierney, Paul Green, John Doolan, Thierry Messi; Guy Ipoua, Adrian Littlejohn.
Straight from the resumption of play Doolan got possession and released IPOUA to the left of goal. He bustled past two defenders and then hit a left foot shot past Lonergan to equalise the score, much to the joy of the fans. By now the Rovers fans were beginning to take Ipoua to their hearts as he worked hard up front and wasn’t afraid to use his weight to some effect. No more clear chances presented themselves until three minutes from the end when Doolan, on the right, put over a great cross to the far angle of the six yard box for Messi to get in a clear header on goal. The ball went just the wrong side of the far post.
A good work out for both teams, each side producing some good football at times. For the Rovers, Dave Penney has had a good look at his trialists, as well as the new players, in a match against good opposition. There is more good opposition to come in the next couple of weeks.

| York 0-2 Rovers |
|
Attendance - 1,174 First Half Doncaster Rovers could have taken the lead in the first 2 minutes when McSporran put in a great cross in from the right, which forced out the York keeper, Paul Crichton and was headed by McIndoe at the far post but his shot went over the bar. York hit back within minutes with a hard low cross from the left by Robertson to an unmarked Groves in the middle but he put his shot wide. The Rovers then began to run the game with Doolan, in midfield, pulling the strings. The home team were bombarded in their penalty area and Crichton put in some stout work but on 23 minutes Price released Fortune-West down the right. He shook off and then outpaced his marker, Clarke and put a great cross in for BEARDSLEY to run in and bullet a header into the back of the net for his second goal in two games. The Rovers were well on top now with Crichton the busiest man on the park. He saved a rocket from McIndoe and then tipped over a shot from McSporran from the right touchline about twenty yards from the centre line, which was heading for the top far corner of the net. Some good passing play from out of defence led to a one two between Leo and Doolan leaving Doolan to chip a shot from 35 yards out just inches over the bar. On 39 minutes, York should have levelled the score when Bishop ran on to a ball over the top of the Rovers defensive line from Law, ran on but put the ball straight into Warrington's hands. From Warrington's clearance McSporran zipped past two York defenders, ran round Robertson and blasted in a shot at the near post which Crichton beat out. Half-time arrived with the Rovers leading 1-0 and having had much more of the play than the home team. Crichton, in particular, had been busy but Warrington had just two saves to make. Second Half Rovers struggled more than in the first half, they had shown less fluency whilst the home team went on the offensive and played much better in this half. They could have scored after 58 minutes when Jones, in the Rovers goal, was challenged by Rowan as he tried to gather a bouncing ball. Rowan got the ball and hit it towards an open goal but Morley got back and cleared off the line. Jones redeemed himself five minutes later by making a fine one handed save as he twisted and tipped a shot from Rowan over the bar. Littlejohn, a former Sheffield United player and now in his early thirties showed that he was still able to produce some pace and a shot, which on one occasion Mawson, the York keeper, could not hold. On 73 minutes, despite a lot of York attacks it was the Rovers who scored the next goal. A long clearance out of the Rovers defence was chased down by the tall, gangling ONIBUJE and as the keeper came out he lobbed it over him, picked it up again and slotted into the net. Seconds later and goal no 3 nearly arrived when Coppinger did well on the left, crossed to the middle where Raw intercepted but headed the ball against the underside of the bar and bounced out into play. Play was still even to the final whistle but the better finishing of the Rovers gave them the win by two clear goals. A very good performance all-round by The Rovers
